About the event
Genesius Theatre closes out October with the Hamilton Deane and John Balderston stage version of Dracula, the adaptation commissioned by Bram Stoker's widow and the first the estate authorized. It is the same script that put Bela Lugosi in the cape on American stages and went on to shape the horror films that followed, with Christopher Lee later taking up the role.
The story unfolds in the 1920s, moving between the London home of Dr. Seward and the Count's own crypt. Jonathan Harker is searching for the cause of the illness weakening Lucy. When her father calls in the unconventional Abraham Van Helsing, the family's mysterious neighbor, Count Dracula, also offers to help, and it becomes harder to tell whose concern for her can be trusted.
Genesius describes the production as parlor horror, a nod to classic literature, the stage, the screen, and everything that goes bump in the night. A Halloween night curtain at 7:30 PM makes it a fitting way to spend the evening in downtown Reading.
