WhereHawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Rd, Kempton

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary opens its trails after dark for a guided hike under the light of the full moon. The route follows the Sanctuary's paths while the group looks and listens for the animals that stir once the sun goes down, making it a different experience from a daytime visit to this well known ridge above Kempton.

The terrain here is rocky, so this outing suits people who are comfortable walking uneven ground in low light. Sturdy hiking shoes are important, and staff suggest bringing water, snacks, and a backpack. A headlamp keeps your hands free on the trail, with red light models preferred because they are easier on night vision, though a flashlight works too.

Space is small by design, which keeps the group quiet enough to catch the sounds of the woods. It is a relaxed way to spend an autumn evening close to home, with the moon doing much of the work of lighting the way.
