The Reading Symphony Orchestra takes the stage at the Santander Performing Arts Center with a program built around Mahler's Symphony No. 4, led by conductor Andrew Constantine. The evening opens with John Adams's The Chairman Dances and Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 before turning to Mahler, whose Fourth is among his most lyrical and welcoming symphonies. It moves between childlike wonder and deeper reflection, closing with a soprano solo that paints a child's vision of heaven.
Soprano Emily Birsan joins the orchestra for that final movement. She performs opera and concert repertoire across America and abroad, with leading roles at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Welsh National Opera and Boston Lyric Opera, and concert appearances at Carnegie Hall and the Ravinia Festival. Her recording work includes Elgar's oratorio The Saga of St. Olaf with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
