Free Counseling for Abuse and Assault Survivors From Safe Berks

Safe Berks offers free, confidential counseling for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and for their significant others, from its Counseling Department in Reading. Children who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault can be counseled too.

The counseling is trauma informed. A counselor works with you one to one, and survivors engage in solution-focused strategies to achieve their own goals. Counseling also includes education about how trauma affects individuals and families, support to create a personal safety plan, and connections to supportive community resources. Safe Berks also runs support groups that focus on mindfulness, emotions, relationships, coping, support from peers and skill-building. Counseling is available in all languages.

The same Counseling Department offers free financial counseling and help with housing resources. That includes individual counseling on economic and housing goals, financial empowerment classes, job fairs, help with resume writing, help with clothing for interviews and employment, connections with employers seeking staff, connections with housing opportunities, and assistance in recovery from financial abuse. Financial abuse can include preventing the victim from working, preventing access to financial resources, and destroying the victim's credit.

To request counseling, or for questions specific to counseling, call 610-373-1206, ext. 606. All services are free and confidential.

The main office is at 255 Chestnut Street, Reading, PA 19602, and its general number is 610-373-1206. The page does not give hours for counseling appointments, support groups or the financial services, and it does not say whether you need an appointment or how soon counseling starts.

If you need help right away, the Safe Berks hotline is answered 24 hours a day in English and Spanish at 1-844-789-SAFE (7233), or you can text SAFE BERKS to 20121. If you are in danger, dial 911.
