The Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS®, commonly abbreviated as R-BAR, is a professional trade association serving licensed real estate practitioners throughout Berks County, Pennsylvania. Its offices are located at 2201 Ridgewood Road, Suite 350, in Wyomissing, just west of the city of Reading, and it can be reached at (610) 375-8458. The association represents approximately 1,000 real estate licensees, including residential and commercial agents, brokers, and affiliated industry professionals such as lenders, title agents, and home inspectors.
Unlike a brokerage or a real estate agency, R-BAR does not list or sell property itself. It functions as the organizing body for the local real estate profession: it administers membership, delivers continuing education, handles ethics complaints and commission arbitration, maintains public research tools, and advocates on legislation affecting property owners and the housing market in Berks County.
History
The association traces its origins to March 15, 1922, when the National Association of Real Estate Boards chartered the Reading Real Estate Board. That organization later became the Greater Reading Board of Realtors, which was formally incorporated in 1972. In 1993 the board adopted its present name, the Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS®, reflecting a membership that had expanded well beyond the city limits into the surrounding boroughs and townships of Berks County.
With a continuous history reaching back more than a century, R-BAR is one of the older local REALTOR® associations in Pennsylvania. Along the way it has added several operating arms, including the Commercial & Industrial Council, founded in 1994, and Cornerstone Publications, Inc., which publishes the consumer facing property portal Real Estate in Berks. The association also operates R-BAR Care, Inc., its charitable and community service entity.
Governance and Structure
R-BAR is governed by a Board of Directors made up of thirteen REALTOR® members elected to three-year terms. Day to day work is carried out by staff and by a network of member committees and task forces covering areas such as professional standards, education, government affairs, community outreach, and technology. Membership in the association is voluntary. Those who join at the REALTOR® level are automatically enrolled in the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS® and the National Association of REALTORS®, giving them access to state and national resources in addition to local programming.
Membership Categories
- Primary and secondary REALTOR® membership for licensed agents, with a pro-rated monthly dues schedule for those joining mid year
- Designated REALTOR® and new brokerage membership for brokers of record establishing an office in the service area
- Affiliate Partner membership for real estate related businesses, including mortgage lenders, home inspection firms, and title companies, offered at four annual tiered sponsorship levels with corresponding networking, advertising, and marketing benefits
- Commercial & Industrial Council membership for professionals focused on commercial and industrial property
The Commercial & Industrial Council hosts monthly events and sets its own dues.
Real Estate in Berks
R-BAR owns and operates Real Estate in Berks, a digital property search platform described by the association as the most comprehensive source of listed properties and open houses in the county. Consumers can search residential and commercial listings, narrow results by school district, and view a complete, regularly updated calendar of open houses being held across Berks County. The site also publishes monthly market updates drawn from Bright MLS data, which gives buyers, sellers, and local observers a running picture of inventory, pricing, and sales activity.
Alongside the listing search, the platform hosts several directories. The REALTOR® directory allows searches by last name, first name, or office and covers more than 965 local members affiliated with brokerages including Century 21 Gold, Keller Williams Platinum Realty, Coldwell Banker Realty, RE/MAX of Reading, Iron Valley Real Estate, and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty. A separate Find a Business directory connects consumers with affiliate professionals, and a dedicated lender search covers mortgage companies, banks, and credit unions.
Consumer Protection and Dispute Resolution
One of the association's core functions is administering the professional standards process. Its Professional Standards Committee convenes hearing panels for two types of matters: arbitration of commission disputes between Designated REALTOR® members, which must be filed within 180 days of closing, and ethics complaints alleging violations of the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics. Possible outcomes range from letters of reprimand to fines and suspension of membership.
For buyers and sellers, R-BAR administers the Home Sellers/Home Buyers Dispute Resolution System, a mediation option intended as an alternative to litigation. The program is designed to resolve transaction related disagreements without the court costs, attorney fees, and delays associated with formal legal action. Members also have access to legal resources including the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS® Legal Hotline.
Research Tools
The association maintains a municipal database developed in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS®. It compiles real estate related laws, ordinances, permit requirements, and procedures for municipalities across Berks County, and each entry notes the date it was last reviewed. For agents working across township and borough lines, and for property owners trying to confirm local requirements, the database serves as a practical reference point.
Education and Advocacy
R-BAR offers new member orientation, webinars through the state association, technology and artificial intelligence training delivered with Bright MLS, fair housing education, and safety awareness sessions. Members are also connected to larger industry gatherings such as the Triple Play Conference and the Keystone Broker Exchange.
On the policy side, the association describes itself as the only organization in Berks County advocating exclusively for home ownership, private property rights, and strong communities. It monitors local, state, and federal legislation affecting real estate, and its non-partisan political action committee, R-BAR PAC, provides candidate endorsements, voter data, and campaign support.
Community Involvement
Charitable and civic activity is coordinated in part through R-BAR Care, Inc.
Advertising Opportunities
Industry related businesses can advertise through Real Estate in Berks using web ads, call-out ads that link directly to an advertiser's website, and e-flyer blasts distributed to hundreds of local REALTORS® and affiliates. Ads are also syndicated to Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and X. Advertising inquiries are handled at (610) 375-2610 or advertise@realestateinberks.com.
