Plan the day
Steamtown National Historic Site is a National Park Service railroad yard and museum in downtown Scranton, PA, built around a working roundhouse and turntable.
Entry to the museums, roundhouse and grounds is free, and from June to early November the Scranton Limited yard shuttle runs Fridays to Sundays for $6. A few weekends each season bring full excursions to Tobyhanna, Cresco or the Delaware Water Gap. Between rides there are the History and Technology Museums, a locomotive cutaway, Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4012 and the 18-minute park film Steel and Steam.
Before you go
Excursion tickets go on sale on Recreation.gov on the 15th of the month before the trip and are non-refundable unless the park cancels; seating is first come, first served. Yard rides leave at 10:30, 11:30, 1:15 and 2:30. The walkway to the Marketplace closes in winter.
Coming up
Fall excursions run to Cresco on October 11 and to the Delaware Water Gap on October 24; the Scranton Limited yard rides continue Fridays to Sundays through November 8.
