Trail and Forest Road Maintenance as Forest Management
September 12, 2026 · 9:00 AM · Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Rd, Kempton · Registration required; class size limited to 10 students, with a minimum of 5 needed to hold the course. Designed for aspiring conservation professionals and landowners.

About the event
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary opens its trails and forest access roads as a working classroom for a day of practical land stewardship training. The focus is on maintaining trails and forest roads in ways that limit their impact on surrounding wildlands, with instruction drawn from the sanctuary's long conservation practice in the Kempton hills. Participants spend the day working outdoors and learning techniques they can apply on their own properties or in their conservation careers.
The course is part of Hawk Mountain's Professional Land Stewardship Series, built for aspiring conservation professionals and landowners alike. Each course in the series stands on its own or can be taken together as a fuller skill-building sequence, so newcomers and experienced land managers both have a place here.
Come dressed for fieldwork in long pants, a long sleeved shirt, and boots. Hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. Bring a packed lunch as well, since the group eats together and uses the break to keep the conservation conversation going.
