LIHEAP Heating Grants for UGI Customers
UGI Utilities points its customers to LIHEAP, Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which offers energy assistance grants to income-qualified customers to help pay for heat. The 2025-2026 LIHEAP season is now closed.
There are two kinds of grants. A cash grant does not require that you have an unpaid bill. A crisis grant is for emergency situations: broken heating equipment or leaking gas lines that must be fixed or replaced, being without fuel, utility service termination, or being in danger of being without fuel or having utility service terminated.
If you are eligible for a cash grant, the payment is sent directly to UGI and credited to your natural gas account. Crisis grants are additional money for people in danger of losing their heat. Assistance for those in emergency situations is available 24 hours a day, and your local county assistance office can tell you more.
Eligibility is based on household income at 150% of the federal poverty income guidelines. Under the 2025-2026 guidelines, one person can earn up to $23,475 a year, or $1,956 a month. A family of four can earn up to $48,225 a year, or $4,019 a month. The other limits are $31,725 a year for two, $39,975 for three, $56,475 for five, $64,725 for six, $72,975 for seven and $81,225 for eight, with $8,250 more per person a year for households above eight.
Applications are processed by the county assistance office, not by UGI. Have these ready:
- your heating bill
- the names, birthdates and Social Security numbers for all household members
- proof of income for all household members
On the application, look for the checkbox that lets you share your household income data with public utility companies like UGI. That allows utilities to streamline enrollment in other assistance programs and may reduce your paperwork. Once the county assistance office processes your application, you will receive a letter stating whether you were approved or denied.
