About the program
At Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, you can try your hand as a Hopewell molder. In this hands-on program, you work through the process of making a sand mold and learn how the molder's craft fit into the daily operation of the furnace.
Casting iron products was exact work, and the molders who did it were among the highest paid ironworkers. The skills took years to learn and were often passed from father to son. The program gives you a closer look at that work and what it took to do it well.
The program runs in the Cast House within the historic furnace complex and lasts about an hour. It begins promptly at the posted start time, so allow at least five minutes to walk downhill from the Visitor Center. Space is limited, so it helps to arrive early. The program is free and suitable for families.
