Step into Christmas as the families of eighteenth century Pennsylvania would have known it. The Daniel Boone Homestead opens its historic area for an afternoon of English and Pennsylvania German holiday traditions, with decorated buildings, costumed storytelling, and the smell of woodsmoke in the December air. Visitors can tour the Boone House and see both the English and German parlors dressed for the season, watch the blacksmith at work in his shop, walk through the Homestead Barn, and continue up to the Bertolet Log House, where the architectural history of the log cabin is part of the tour.
Children have plenty to do. A Christmas scavenger hunt winds through the historic area and ends with a holiday treat bag, and quill pens are on hand for writing letters to Santa the old fashioned way. Santa is here for visits and pictures, and the Belsnickel makes an appearance as well, a fur clad figure from rural Pennsylvania German lore who cuts a very different profile from the Santa Claus most families know today.
The Penn State Master Gardeners lead holiday swag making for visitors of any age, and complimentary hot chocolate and hot wassail are served throughout the afternoon. The event is presented and funded by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. Please leave pets at home, and note that the grounds are smoke free.
