About the event
The Imani Winds bring their program "The People Could Fly: America at 250" to the WCR Center for the Arts on Friday, November 13 at 7:30 PM. The Grammy-winning quintet has spent its career widening what a group of five wind players can do, pairing standard chamber repertoire with newly commissioned work and performing on major stages around the world.
This program blends music with narrative, drawing on pieces by living composers whose work touches on migration, resistance, and the pursuit of justice. Inspired by the African American folktale that gives the program its name, it approaches America's 250th year as a reflection on freedom, memory, and transformation. The quintet's familiar voices of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon carry the evening.
The WCR Center for the Arts sits at 140 N 5th Street in downtown Reading, a room whose scale suits chamber music well. The concert is supported by a Gertrude Sternbergh grant from the Reading Musical Foundation.
