About the class
The YMCA teaches swimming and water safety together, so swimmers build skills and confidence in the water. Learn to Swim Levels 1 through 4 move from water acclimation, where swimmers bob, float and glide with help, through water movement and water stamina, where they swim, float and tread on their own for longer distances. Level 4 introduces stroke technique and endurance, with front crawl and backstroke plus the breaststroke and butterfly kicks. Classes are taught by certified swim instructors, and some Level 1 through 4 classes are offered bilingually in English and Spanish.
Each session is made up of six 30-minute lessons in the pool at the Reading YMCA. Days and times depend on the class and level you choose. Pick the level that matches your swimmer's skills; an instructor can suggest the right placement if you are unsure.
Along with the youth levels, the schedule includes AquaBabies and AquaTots water discovery classes and an adult learn-to-swim class. AquaBabies and AquaTots are parent and child classes, so a grown-up gets in the water too, and children who are not potty trained need a swim diaper. Sign up online or at the front desk.
