The Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead host a fall lecture in the Education Center, with the German Regiment as the afternoon's subject. It is a chance to spend a Sunday afternoon with a piece of Revolutionary War history that runs straight through this part of Pennsylvania.

The unit, also known as the German Battalion, was authorized in May 1776 and recruited ethnic Germans from Maryland and Pennsylvania. Five of its companies came from eastern Pennsylvania, with the rest raised in Baltimore and Frederick counties in Maryland, and the men went on to serve at Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. For a site that interprets the life of an 18th century German immigrant who shaped colonial Pennsylvania, it is a fitting topic.

The homestead sits on 26 acres in Womelsdorf and holds the distinction of a National Historic Landmark, with monuments, a gazebo, the Weiser family cemetery, and a pond on the grounds. Arriving early or staying after leaves time for a walk around the property before heading home.
