Bowers turns into a destination for heat seekers when the Chile Pepper Festival takes over William DeLong Memorial Park. Vendors from around the region set up with hot sauces, salsas, seasonings, jerky, pepper infused snacks and sweets, along with milder choices for anyone who wants the flavor without much fire. Sampling as you walk the rows is part of the experience, and the stands are happy to steer you toward a heat level you can handle.
The Chile Pepper Ramblers provide music from the stage, and the jalapeno eating contest takes place on September 12 at 1 p.m., with sign ups at the stage at noon for anyone willing to compete for trophies and cash prizes. The grounds include a children's playground and are set up for accessibility, so families and groups of all ages can spread out and take their time.
Hours run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Come ready for outdoor walking on grass, bring a hat for sunny stretches, and note that BYOB is not permitted at the park.
