About the event
Reading Civic Theater brings Carrie: The Musical to its Exeter stage for a Sunday matinee, timed for the stretch of late October when a story about power and consequences feels right at home. The show follows Carrie White, a high school outcast who wants nothing more than to fit in. She is picked on by the popular crowd, overlooked by nearly everyone else, and ruled at home by a mother whose love comes wrapped in control.
What her classmates and her mother do not know is that Carrie has discovered an unusual power of her own, and she is willing to use it when pushed far enough. The musical draws on Stephen King's novel, with a score by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, turning a familiar horror story into something sung from the inside out.
It is a strong pick for theater lovers, for anyone who knows the story and wants to hear it set to music, and for local audiences who like seeing ambitious work staged close to home. Doors open on Perkiomen Avenue, with easy access for Reading, Exeter, and the surrounding townships.
